Studio Rehab For The Hip

The hip is one of the body’s largest and most important joints. It is a ball-and-socket joint and it’s design allows the hip to be both stable and mobile, giving us the ability to walk, climb stairs, squat, run and change direction. Around the joint sits a strong capsule, reinforced by ligaments, while the surrounding muscles – particularly the glutes, hip flexors, adductors and deep rotators – work constantly to control movement and absorb load.

The hip is designed to tolerate all of these competing forces. During walking the hip joint experiences forces several times your bodyweight. This ratio is increased even further with functional activities such as climbing stairs, running and sport. When pain, surgery or injury interrupts this system, muscles weaken, balance declines, movement patterns change and confidence in loading the leg often drops. This is why rehabilitation is such an important part of recovery – it helps restore strength, movement, control and trust in the hip again.

Rehabilitation is particularly important after a total hip replacement, following a hip injection, or after an acute injury such as a muscle strain, labral injury or traumatic flare-up.

Studio Rehab After a Hip Injection:

While injections can offer quick relief from pain and inflammation, they imporantly create a window of opportunity for rehabilitation. In fact, we won’t offer you a hip injection without a commitment to follow up rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation is what actually addresses the root causes of your pain and dysfunction. Targeting specific weaknesses and guiding you on the right frequency, intensity, and progression of exercises- read more about why rehab is so important post injection here.

Studio Rehab After Hip Surgery:

After surgery, your hip can be left feeling stiff, weak, and a little unpredictable in how it moves (we call this proprioception). That’s completely normal and part of the healing process. Your physio will take all of this into account, looking closely at the type of surgery you’ve had, where you are in the healing process and what matters most to you – before building exercises that are both safe and genuinely effective for your stage of recovery. Stiffness is combatted through ‘hands on’ mobilisations within the sessions.

Following hip replacement, early mobilisation and progressive exercise are strongly associated with better function, improved walking ability and a safer return to everyday activities. NICE guidance highlights the value of post-operative rehabilitation focusing on strength, range of movement, gait re-education and functional retraining.

If your consultant has given you a post-op protocol to follow, we’ll use this as our roadmap, helping guide your progression and keep your expectations realistic and on track every step of the way.

Why Studio Rehab?

1. Manual Therapy (the hands on stuff!)

Hands-on manual therapy often includes hip mobilisations. Your physiotherapist will gently move your hip joint through its natural range of motion, easing stiffness and helping the joint glide more freely. This can help reduce pain, ease stiffness, and support your hip’s return to normal, comfortable movement.

2. Progressive Exercise

Studio rehab involves a physiotherapist guiding you through a tailored, progressive exercise programme. A key part of studio rehab is working through the three levels of exercise;

  • Level 1 Restoring the basics: pain management, gentle mobility, muscle activation and normal movement patterns. After a hip replacement this may include early walking practice, simple range-of-motion work and glute activation. After an injection or acute injury it may mean settling pain while reintroducing light loading.
  • Level 2 Building strength and control. This is where exercises become more functional – step-ups, single-leg balance work, bridges, resisted hip strengthening and movement retraining.
  • Level 3 Performance and return to life. This stage prepares you for longer walks, hills, gym work, golf, running or sport-specific tasks, depending on your goals.

3. Return to the things you love

Our favourite part. We love to discharge patients back to the sports and activities that they love to do. What excites us even more is when we discharge people back to things that they never thought were possible to achieve.

Is Studio Rehab for Me?

We know that exercise can feel daunting after an injury. That’s why you won’t leave with a generic sheet of exercises. Our physiotherapists stay with you every step of the way. We fine-tune your programme so it’s always pitched just right. Enough to challenge your hip and keep you progressing, but never more than you’re ready for.

Studio rehab is all about getting you back to the long-term things you love. Whether that’s in the garden, hitting personal bests in the gym, or simply walking without a second thought. At your very first session, we’ll sit down and ask about your goals, so come ready to chat! This helps us shape every session around your hobbies, interests, and the things you actually need your knee to do.

We aim to keep your rehab to a gold-standard. We want you to know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and do it well.
